Clay banks, gullies and cliff edges: where Shore nests turn up
On the North Shore, German and common wasp nests most often turn up in the ground: in clay banks, under retaining walls and in the bush gullies that run behind streets from Glenfield and Birkenhead to Torbay and Long Bay. Late summer is when they become obvious, as colonies peak in size and foraging wasps start pestering outdoor tables and fruit trees.
The East Coast Bays sit on sandstone and mudstone that weathers into clay, and the cut banks of hillside subdivisions in Albany, Pinehill and Unsworth Heights give wasps easy digging. Gully-edge properties should check banks and the base of fences through January and February, because a nest hidden in long grass is easy to disturb with a mower.
Older villas in Devonport, Northcote and Birkenhead offer a different site: gaps in weatherboards and the roof space, where a nest can grow unseen until wasps appear indoors. Asian paper wasps build smaller open nests under eaves and in shrubs.
What to tell a business, and access on steep sections
Describe the nest's position and the ground around it. A nest at the bottom of a steep bank, on a cliff-top section or inside a wall cavity calls for a different approach and time allowance than one in a flat lawn, so mention the slope, any steps, the height of the entrance and whether a ladder is needed.
Cliff-top homes along the bays need extra care: soil near eroding edges can be unstable, and a nest close to the edge may not be safe to reach. Ask the business how it will work there, and keep children and pets away in the meantime. Do not block a wall or roof cavity entrance, as wasps can then find a way into the house.
If the nest is in a public reserve or council land behind the fence, report it to Auckland Council rather than arranging treatment yourself. Confirm the insects are wasps and not honey bees, since bee swarms are usually collected by beekeepers instead. When comparing quotes, ask whether a return visit is included if activity continues, what product is planned near vegetable beds or a fishpond, and whether whoever does the work is qualified to use it.
